Do you know how your gas valves operate? It’s actually a fairly simple process. The valve controls the pilot light and the water temperature. In order to light the pilot, a button on the valve is pressed, which sends a small amount of gas to the device.
The next step: The pilot then heats up a piece called the thermocouple, which sends an electrical current to the control valve. At this point, gas will flow from the safety valve to the pilot, keeping it lit continuously.
If we’re working to diagnose a gas valve issue, we’ll first check to see if the pilot light is on. If so, this means that the thermocouple has enough voltage to keep the safety valve open. Let’s say we’re working on a hot-water heater: If the thermopile is weak, it may not be producing enough power to open both the safety valve and the main valve together. If replacing the thermopile doesn’t fix the issue, then you’ll need a new gas valve.

Gas valves: just the facts
- If you look at your valve, you’ll notice two probes that are coming out of the back. The shorter one is a safety device that interrupts gas flow if the thermostat malfunctions. The longer one is the temperature probe, which controls your settings with the aid of a rod inside of it.
